One of the most famous pearls ever, “La Peregrina” was found in the 16th century by a Spanish slave in the gulf of Panama. It was worn by a succession of Spanish queens, the Bonapartes in the 19th century, finally, in 1969 Richard Burton bought it for his wife; Elizabeth Taylor.
According to Arab legend; Pearls come to being from dewdrops which fall from heaven on the night of the full moon. The oysters then carry away into the depths of the sea, a little of that marvelous light from the star that marks out our time – and the pearl is born.
Cleopatra the Queen of Egypt once bet the Emperor of Rome Marcus Antonius that she could throw the most expensive dinner party that cost more than a small country. She ground up one of her pearl earrings (worth even in her day over 10$ million) poured the powder into her wine and drank it. Marc Antony conceded that she easily won the bet.
It is said that the Roman General Vitellius financed an entire military campaign by selling just one of his mother’s earrings.
According to Chinese tradition, pearls bring love, money, protection and luck. Pearls are also thought to quicken the laws of karma, keep children safe and strengthen love relationships. Pearls have also always been symbols of purity and innocence.
